To eat some sweets before drinking tea is the most simplified form of chaji, or "tea function."
In a formal chaji, the guests enjoy a meal called kaiseki while exchanging some rounds of sake and pleasant conversation among themselves and with the host.
The meal is completed with serving of a confection and tea. This can be likened to French cuisine, where a full-course meal is enjoyed with wine, ending with cake and coffee. What is defferent in the case of a chaji is that the tea is not merely an after-meal beverage, but is the central focus of the event.
Eating meal and drinking tea is a daily part of our lives. A chaji involves offering a meal and tea to guests, and so it is founded in common activities.Onto that foundation from daily life, chaji adds the spirit of hospitalities. Chado teaches that "guets should be treated as dignitaries."
